Explore Mendocino County’s Rugged Coastline, Redwoods, and Wine Country

From dramatic ocean bluffs and storybook coastal villages to towering redwoods and rolling vineyards, Mendocino County showcases Northern California at its most captivating. Highway 1 traces the rugged Mendocino Coast past hidden beaches, historic lighthouses, and sweeping headlands. Inland, Highway 128 winds through ancient forests to the acclaimed wineries of the Anderson Valley.

Driving up from the Bay Area, Highway 1 dips and curves along Northern California’s ruggedly beautiful coastline as it enters Mendocino County. Along the South Coast, low tide reveals curious sandstone formations at Bowling Ball Beach, while nearby Point Arena Lighthouse rises above some of California’s most spectacular coastal scenery.

Mendocino and Little River

Farther north, Mendocino Village charms with Victorian architecture, weathered cottages, art galleries, and bluff-top trails overlooking the Pacific. In winter, scan the horizon for migrating whales. Paddle the wildlife-rich Big River estuary or take a guided kayak tour of sea caves at Van Damme State Beach in Little River. Continuing north, follow the coast to Point Cabrillo Light Station, Russian Gulch State Park, and the oceanfront Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens.

Fort Bragg

In Fort Bragg, the region’s lumber-town heritage meets a growing food, craft beer, and arts scene. Walk the coastal trails of Noyo Headlands Park, hunt for colorful treasures at Glass Beach, or board the historic Skunk Train to venture into the redwoods. For a more intimate journey, pedal a custom railbike built for two.

Beyond the coast, Anderson Valley offers a quieter take on California wine country. Family-owned wineries specialize in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and cool-climate Alsatian varietals. Nearby redwood groves, farm stands, and artisan food producers add to the valley’s rural appeal.
