SIERRA NEVADA & NATIONAL PARKS
Surrounded by the majestic Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe is renowned for its remarkably clear blue waters, forested mountains, and world-class outdoor recreation. Straddling the California–Nevada border, North America’s largest alpine lake is a four-season wonderland. In winter, it hosts some of North America’s best skiing and snowboarding. In the summer, it transforms into a hub for boating, paddling, hiking, biking, and more.
On the lake’s southern shore, South Lake Tahoe is a lively base for exploring. Spend summer afternoons paddling the clear waters of the lake or relaxing on sandy beaches. Nearby, Emerald Bay State Park offers one of Tahoe’s most iconic views, with a tiny island rising from brilliant turquoise waters. Hike to Vikingsholm, a Scandinavian-inspired historic estate, or explore the trails surrounding Fallen Leaf Lake. In winter, Heavenly Mountain Resort draws skiers and snowboarders to its slopes overlooking the lake.
Along the northwest shore, Tahoe City combines mountain-town charm with easy access to beaches, trails, and outdoor recreation. Stroll the lakefront, bike the scenic paved paths along the Truckee River, or explore nearby Palisades Tahoe, home to the 1960 Winter Olympics and some of Tahoe’s most epic terrain. The surrounding mountains offer miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, while the lake’s sheltered coves invite leisurely days on the water.
Just 12 miles north of the lake, Truckee is Lake Tahoe’s historic rugged gateway. The town’s authentic, pioneer-era storefronts and brick buildings now house upscale boutiques, galleries, and exceptional craft breweries. A vibrant basecamp for outdoor adventure, Truckee is just minutes from Northstar, Sugar Bowl Resort, and Palisades Tahoe. It also provides easy access to Donner Lake and hiking and biking trails in the surrounding mountains.
