SIERRA NEVADA & NATIONAL PARKS
In California’s far north, snowcapped Mount Shasta rises above dense forests, volcanic terrain, pristine rivers, and rugged alpine wilderness. To the west, the Trinity Alps reveal a less-traveled world of granite peaks, glacial lakes, and remote backcountry trails. These extraordinary landscapes offer a quieter, less-traveled side of Northern California, with remarkable opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wilderness adventures.
Rising to more than 14,000 feet, Mount Shasta dominates the surrounding landscape. In summer, explore its forested trails, visit the clear waters of Lake Siskiyou, or head to Castle Crags State Park for dramatic views of granite spires. Winter brings skiing, snowshoeing, and other adventures to the mountain’s snowy slopes.
Just southeast of the mountain, McCloud preserves the character of a historic lumber town. Its charming downtown features century-old buildings, local shops, and inviting restaurants. Nearby, the storied McCloud River has long attracted anglers to its cold, clear, spring-fed waters. The river’s three celebrated waterfalls—Lower, Middle, and Upper Falls—cascade through beautiful forest settings, drawing hikers and photographers. Follow the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway east of town to McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, home to one of Northern California’s most spectacular waterfalls.
West of Mount Shasta, Weaverville is a beautifully preserved Gold Rush town and a gateway to the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Stroll its historic Main Street, visit the remarkable 19th-century Joss House State Historic Park, or discover the area’s gold-mining heritage. Beyond town, the Trinity Alps offer spectacular hiking, backpacking, fishing, and alpine lake adventures. The nearby Trinity River is also a celebrated destination for fishing and whitewater rafting.
