Sand Rock Farm: A Historic Winery Estate Turned Secluded Retreat

Nestled amid 10 acres of redwoods and oaks south of Santa Cruz, the historic Sand Rock Farm is a secluded retreat where time slows down. The lovingly restored estate weaves fine craftsmanship and a rich winemaking history with tranquil landscapes and a touch of romance.

The original 1,000-acre ranch was established by Dr. August and Eva Lilliencrantz in the 1880s. They planted over 70 acres of wine grapes and built Santa Cruz County’s first winery. By 1907, they were shipping 130,000 gallons of wine a year. As Prohibition loomed, the Lilliencrantz family pivoted to cattle ranching, and the vineyards gave way to pasture. But the estate’s legacy and craftsmanship endured, and more than a century later, it would inspire a remarkable restoration.

A Restoration Reveals the Soul of the Estate

The Lilliencrantz’s original 1887 cottage was built from redwood trees that were milled onsite. In 1910, the family expanded the cottage footprint with the construction of the beautiful Arts and Crafts-style farmhouse that now serves as Sand Rock Farm’s main house.

In the early 2000s, former San Francisco chef Lynn Sheehan and her mother, Kris Sheehan, embarked on a painstaking revival of Sand Rock Farm. Their restoration work revealed the soul of the old estate, including a magnificent front door and fireplace mantel crafted from rare curly redwood, a honeycomb of live bees hidden in the walls (now honored by the name of the Honeycomb Suite), and the ruins of the original Lilliencrantz winery.

The well-preserved architectural details speak to the farmhouse’s storied past, while a tasteful blend of antiques and modern accents exudes the cozy feel of a family home decorated with furnishings collected over time. An Eastlake-style parlor mirror, once part of the Claus Spreckels mansion from 1870, adds a gleam of Gilded Age splendor. Paired with midcentury-inspired seating and other modern pieces, the interiors take on a timeless quality.

A Stay Steeped in Comfort and Nature

The inn’s five light-filled suites open to garden and woodland views, each room a tranquil blend of period details and modern comfort. The suites’ luxuriously comfortable beds, Jacuzzi tubs, and electric fireplaces create cozy retreats after days spent exploring nearby beaches and the Corralitos Wine Trail. Each suite is also equipped with Wi-Fi, television, plush towels, and premium bath amenities. Two of the suites offer direct outdoor access and are pet-friendly.

Guests wake to chirping birds, the scent of eucalyptus trees, and a delicious breakfast served each morning. The breakfasts are made from scratch and feature fresh eggs from the farm’s own hens. A morning stroll along the nature trail is a perfect way to start the day. You might spot wild turkeys, deer, quail, or even a fox among the trees. In the afternoons, you can relax with a book on the sunny reading porch or in the Adirondack chairs nestled beneath the shade of an old-growth redwood. At night, you can gather around the fire pit on the deck or enjoy a soak in the ensuite Jacuzzi tub.

The estate’s heritage oak and towering redwood trees lend the inn a cathedral-like stillness. The redwood grove—with its trickling fountain and dappled sunlight—has become a beloved spot for couples to exchange wedding vows. Surrounding the farmhouse, Japanese maples blaze in autumn color, while the wisteria arbors burst into bloom each spring. Paths wind through a hidden garden, where heirloom roses and perennials bloom throughout the year.

Just steps away, the ruins of the original 1887 barrel-aging cellar whisper stories of the estate’s winemaking past. The arched stone walls still bear the original iron hinges of the cellar’s large wooden doors. The space has been gracefully repurposed as an outdoor event and dining venue, where flickering candles and fairy lights transform the timeworn walls into something magical. Nearby, the remnants of the 19th-century gravity-fed winery walls stand as a reminder of the Lilliencrantz family’s pioneering role in Santa Cruz wine history.

Life on the Farm

Though much smaller than its original 1,000 acres, Sand Rock Farm still hums with the simple joys of farm life. Taking the reins from Kris Sheehan several years ago, current owners Derek and Jen Hagglof have continued many of Sand Rock Farm’s traditions and added some of their own. You’ll find fresh flowers from the garden in each of the rooms. A brood of hens provides the eggs for morning breakfasts. Baby goats provide adorable entertainment while two resident dogs and a farm cat round out the farm’s four-legged family.

Although Sand Rock Farm now primarily serves as a wedding venue and tends to be booked out months in advance, lucky travelers can still snag a reservation midweek and during the off-season. It’s a worthy effort to experience this secluded, timeless retreat.

Historic California Landmarks Reinvented as Boutique Hotels

Some boutique hotels come with more than style and service—they come with stories. Across California, a surprising number of stays began as something entirely different: a lighthouse guiding ships to shore, a courthouse annex, even a 1950s auto repair garage. These buildings have lived whole other lives before being reborn as one-of-a-kind escapes for travelers. Today, their pasts whisper through preserved architecture, clever design nods, and the occasional ghost of their former purpose.

The Butler Hotel

A sophisticated industrial-chic retreat in San Luis Obispo, The Butler Hotel was once a 1950s auto repair garage. The vintage metal and steel prefab structure had sat abandoned for years when a local architect saw its potential hidden beneath the overgrown ivy. Repurposed into a boutique hotel, the property still sports weathered steel panels and polished concrete floors that reveal the patina of age. However, once inside, the industrial façade gives way to an unexpectedly upscale experience featuring mid-century modern design elements, a vinyl library lounge, and a curated collection of art. The hotel also offers modern tech features like self-check-in and virtual concierge services.

The Darling Hotel

The Darling Hotel’s elegantly restored Art Deco building once served justice, not rooftop cocktails. Built in 1935 as the Tulare County courthouse annex, the stunning building was part of Visalia’s old courthouse square. An earthquake destroyed the courthouse in 1952, but the surviving annex remained in use until 2008. A decade later, local investors restored the building to its former grandeur and opened it as a boutique hotel steeped in Art Deco style. Most of the original woodwork and architecture was preserved, including the lobby’s high ceilings and terrazzo floors. The former board chambers are now suites featuring original mahogany doors and built-in alcoves, while a new rooftop restaurant and heated pool infuse the storied property with modern luxury.

East Brother Light Station

Perched on a rocky islet in San Francisco Bay, East Brother Light Station has guided mariners since 1874 and remains one of California’s last Victorian lighthouses. The lighthouse was slated for demolition in the 1960s, but the Contra Costa Shoreline Parks Committee stepped in to secure recognition for the lighthouse on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1980, a non-profit organization restored the lighthouse and opened it as a bed and breakfast inn. For over 40 years, guests have arrived by boat to be carried back in time, regaled by stories of the lighthouse’s fabled past, and treated to extraordinary meals. Revenues from the inn keep the lights on and ensure the lighthouse’s ongoing restoration and maintenance.

Delta King Hotel

In the 1920s, the Delta King once ferried passengers nightly on the 10-hour cruise between San Francisco and Sacramento. During its heyday, the riverboat’s paddlewheel turned to the beat of jazz bands as patrons reveled in prohibition-era drinking, gambling, and fine dining. During World War II, the Delta King was drafted into the U.S. Navy to serve as a naval barracks and hospital ship in San Francisco Bay. Now moored along the Old Sacramento waterfront, the meticulously restored woodwork and Art Deco details evoke the ship’s glamorous cruising days while two restaurants and a bar bring a lively energy to its decks. Renovated staterooms feature period touches along with upscale amenities and riverside views. Guests enjoy a voyage through time that never leaves the dock.

Presidio Lodging

Within the historic Presidio in San Francisco, two hotels share a rich military past. The Lodge at the Presidio was a former U.S. Army barracks that housed soldiers, while the nearby Inn at the Presidio served as the Bachelor Officers’ Quarters. Both hotels preserve their red-brick facades, but inside, the buildings were reimagined as luxurious, contemporary boutique hotels that honor their military history with inspired design. The Lodge at the Presidio’s original mess hall is now an elegant dining room. The Inn at the Presidio’s suites exude the understated luxury and comfort once reserved for Army officers. Both hotels feature broad porches lined with rocking chairs and a rich array of modern comforts that evoke life “at ease.”

In a former lumber town near Mt. Shasta, a historic building that once housed the lumber company’s bank, offices, and telephone switchboard is now home to the McCloud River Bed & Breakfast. Built in 1903 by the McCloud River Lumber Company, the building was a hub of town life where workers cashed paychecks and managers planned timber harvests. Beautifully restored and renovated, the McCloud River B&B turned each of the spaces into rooms inspired by their history. The switchboard operator’s office became the Switchboard Room, the complaint department became the Mother McCloud Suite, and the former bank vault was transformed into a unique private dining space.

Nestled on a rise above the Mendocino Coast, the Inn at Schoolhouse Creek features several historic cottages. Among the most unique is the Water Tower Cottage. During World War II, the water tower served as a lookout equipped with an anti-aircraft battery for the U.S. Coast Guard. Today, the tower is a prime perch to watch the sunset over the ocean. The base of the tower holds a private hot tub, while a spiral staircase leads to a platform with breathtaking views. Through various eras, the inn’s other historic cottages housed mill workers, military officers, and wandering musicians. Today, they welcome guests with ocean breezes, lush gardens, and a rich history.

Built in 1890 as Miss Mary Lake’s School for Girls, The Queen Anne Hotel retains its genteel Victorian grace. Nestled on the edge of San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood, the grand Victorian was meticulously restored and transformed into a boutique hotel in the 1980s. Upon entering through the etched glass doors, the hotel transports guests to a bygone era with ornate interiors and exquisite antiques. A grand staircase leads to 48 elegant guest rooms, including the popular Mary Lake Suite, which was once the office of the school’s headmistress. Many of the rooms feature wood-burning fireplaces and floor-to-ceiling bay windows. In keeping with the period charm and traditions, the hotel serves afternoon tea and sherry in the parlor each day.

The creative vision of designer Kelly Wearstler masterfully blends the building’s period architectural elements—including its athletic facilities—with a soulful mix of Mexican modernism and other design influences. The Basketball Suite reimagines the building’s original basketball court as a dramatic, luxury suite with double-height ceilings featuring a basketball hoop. The spacious, one-of-a-kind Pool Suite was built around the original indoor swimming pool and features a stunning ceramic tile mural.

A Luxurious Base Camp and a Taste of Summer in Napa Valley

A stay at The Cottages of Napa Valley has the air of summer camp for adults, but the experience is far from roughing it. Nestled along cobbled pathways beneath the towering trees and string lights, the eight vintage cottages exude an enchanting rustic vibe. Woodsmoke drifts through the trees as couples make s’mores by the fire or play croquet and bocce ball on the lawn. A communal gathering space with sliding barn doors houses local art and a vintage canoe suspended from the rafters. A rustic farm table in the center makes a great place to spread out with board games and puzzles or share a bottle of wine and a summer meal prepared on the grill outside.

Walk through the door of one of the cottages and you’re likely to find soft jazz playing over the Bluetooth speaker, a fire glowing in the corner fireplace, and a chilled bottle of wine in the fridge.

Santa Cruz’s Quiet Neighborhoods for a Summer Getaway

In the summertime, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Main Beach buzz with swarms of day-trippers, screaming roller coasters, and the scent of funnel cakes wafting through the air. A few miles down the road, charming Capitola Village brims with vacationers and beach umbrellas lined elbow-to-elbow. But between these two hot spots lies a quieter coastal pocket where locals retreat—and where in-the-know travelers can experience a more authentic slice of Santa Cruz life.

Tucked between the Boardwalk and Capitola, the residential neighborhoods of Pleasure Point and Live Oak offer a low-key alternative to the summer bustle. It’s a part of town where surfboards outnumber selfie sticks, and where the beaches still feel like uncrowded secrets.

Pleasure Point is steeped in surf culture. This was the longtime home of Jack O’Neill, the legendary surfer and wetsuit pioneer whose legacy still ripples across the ocean. East Cliff Drive winds atop the cliffs overlooking Pleasure Point’s surf breaks. A walking path along the cliffs provides a great perch for watching local surfers paddle out and catch waves. The laid-back neighborhood blends beachy ease with a hip, coastal sensibility. A cozy cluster of small businesses anchors the scene, where Verve Coffee Roasters brews up a perfect cup and The Penny Ice Creamery serves inventive, locally sourced flavors just steps from surf shops and casual eateries.

In nearby Live Oak, the local flavor continues. A neighborhood favorite, Lago di Como, serves wood-fired pizzas and Italian riffs on fresh seafood in an intimate setting. Just down the street, Bottega del Como offers gourmet provisions for a picnic at the beach. On Sunday mornings, the Live Oak Farmers Market draws a laid-back crowd of residents shopping for fresh produce and artisanal goods under a canopy of eucalyptus.

A Heritage Home with a Zen Soul

Originally built by Albert Gaige in the late 1800s, the Gaige House’s two-story main home was later converted to a boutique hotel in the 1980s. In 2006, architect Paul Discoe and designer Paul Davis led a transformative renovation that blended Japanese design principles and inspiration from traditional Kyoto ryokans with modern wine country sophistication. Their work established a soothing aesthetic with curated minimalism and tranquil gardens that continue to distinguish the property today.

This spring, the Gaige House unveiled newly renovated suites in the historic main house, each imbued with Zen-inspired tranquility. The Enso Suite opens completely to a private fire-lit patio with accordion glass doors, while the Woodside Suite pairs a dramatic black fireplace with serene views. The suites all feature wet bars, dual-sink vanities, walk-in showers, and a design language that echoes the property’s Japanese influences.

Victorian Hotels that Transport Guests to California’s Gilded Age

California’s best-preserved Victorian hotels and bed and breakfast inns are portals to a bygone era. Spurred by the Gold Rush, these extravagant buildings were constructed during the state’s building boom and reflect the fine craftsmanship and opulence of the time. Below are some of our favorite Victorian hotels and B&Bs to experience California’s Gilded Age with period-perfect architectural details and furnishings.

The Queen Anne Hotel

Enter through the etched glass doors of The Queen Anne Hotel in San Francisco and be transported to an opulent, bygone era. Rising from the wealth of the Gold Rush, the grand Victorian mansion was originally built in 1890 as a finishing school for girls. 90 years later, new owners restored the stunning turn-of-the-century architecture and reopened it as a hotel. Today, the hotel’s lavish parlor welcomes guests with roaring fireplaces, crystal chandeliers, and exquisite antiques. A grand staircase leads to 48 elegant guest rooms and suites, all with luxurious amenities and lavish Victorian charm. Many of the rooms feature wood-burning fireplaces and floor-to-ceiling bay windows with dazzling views of Pacific Heights. In keeping with the period charm, the hotel serves afternoon tea and sherry in the parlor each day.

Churchill Manor

Steps from downtown Napa, Churchill Manor is an architectural treasure listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 10,000-square-foot Second Empire mansion was built in 1889 for a prominent Napa banker. The mansion’s old-world craftsmanship remains beautifully preserved. Original beveled glass doors open to four elegant parlors featuring fireplaces framed with redwood mantels and paneling. Large doorways with massive redwood pocket doors separate the parlors. Six solid redwood-fluted Corinthian columns grace the grand staircase and the music room. Upstairs, 10 elegant guest rooms are each named for Napa Valley wine-growing regions and feature hand-painted doors and European antiques. The mansion’s wide, wraparound porch overlooks an acre of beautiful gardens. Long-time owners Brian and Joanna serve evening wine and cheese and multi-course breakfasts with convivial hospitality.

Gingerbread Mansion

In the Victorian village of Ferndale, staying at the Gingerbread Mansion Inn is like stepping into a Victorian fairytale. Originally constructed in 1895, the meticulously restored mansion incorporates Second Empire with Queen Anne and Eastlake styles. The mansion’s 11 lavish guest rooms are ornately decorated with rich jewel tones, gilded antiques, and period wallpapers. The glamorous Fountain Suite features twin claw foot tubs placed side-by-side overlooking next to a fireplace with hand-painted tiles and a Victorian fainting couch. Enter through the double doors of the Empire Suite and you’ll find an opulent California King bed flanked on either side by towering Corinthian columns. The suite features two fireplaces, including one set beside a claw foot tub. Each afternoon, the inn serves a complimentary high tea with hors d’oeuvres and sweets to enjoy in the mansion’s parlors or the English garden.

Napoleon King room at Monte Cristo Inn

Monte Cristo Bed & Breakfast Inn

Originally built in 1875 as a bordello and saloon, the Monte Cristo Bed & Breakfast Inn is possibly the oldest surviving hospitality building in San Francisco. It remained standing through the devastating 1906 earthquake and later turned into a speakeasy at the height of Prohibition. If the walls could talk, they would undoubtedly have stories to tell. Owner and innkeeper Jack Su has carefully restored the two-story hotel to recreate an ambiance of a bygone era. The inn’s 14 guest rooms are imbued with tasteful Victorian style and feature original wood floors, Persian rugs, Bradbury & Bradbury wallpapers, intricate crown molding, vintage light fixtures, and exquisite antiques. Among the few nods to the 21st Century are the luxurious ensuite marble bathrooms equipped with towel warmers and electronic bidets. Stays include a full breakfast served each morning.

Seemingly bypassed by time, the picture-perfect town of Ferndale is lined with charming Victorian storefronts in the heart of California’s Redwood Coast. Towering above the top of Main Street, the grand Victorian Inn beckons guests to experience the elegance and romance of the timber boom era. Built entirely of native redwood in 1890, the inn is an architectural treasure. The inn’s elegant guest rooms feature 14-foot ceilings, original redwood trim, vintage fixtures, lace curtains, and antique furnishings. Some of the rooms also offer cozy fireplaces and large bay windows overlooking the town. The guest rooms are located on the second floor and share a common space with a kitchenette, seating areas, games, and self-serve coffee and tea.

Simpson House Inn

Secluded behind tall hedges and surrounded by English gardens in a quiet historic neighborhood near State Street, the Simpson House Inn is the grand dame of Santa Barbara’s bed and breakfast inns. The Victorian Estate was built in 1874 when the only method of travel to Santa Barbara was by stagecoach or ship.  It was slated for demolition when Glyn and Linda Davies purchased the home in 1976 and embarked on a meticulous restoration. The overriding décor has a timeless, elegant quality that exudes sophistication and comfort. The six guest rooms in the main house feature antique wood beds, Persian rugs, claw foot tubs, and intricate Victorian wallpaper treatments. English-style cottages are tucked along the back of the garden. Stays include afternoon refreshments, evening wine and heavy hors d’oeuvres, dessert bites, and a gourmet breakfast served in the dining room or delivered to the guest room.

Gables Wine Country Inn

In the heart of Sonoma wine country, Gables Wine Country Inn is a beautifully restored Gothic Victorian built in 1877. The rose-hued mansion features gabled dormers with a turret and intricate wood trim. Inside, the mansion boasts three antique Italian marble fireplaces, an opulent mahogany spiral staircase, 12-foot ceilings, antique furnishings, and claw foot tubs in each of the main house guest rooms. One of the most spacious rooms is the Parlor Room, which features a massive king-sized four-poster bed and a marble fireplace. The inn is nestled on three and a half bucolic acres with an enchanting redwood grove, a small working vineyard, and an old barn that was part of the property’s original cattle ranch. A stay includes a three-course breakfast served each morning and a wine passport for complimentary wine tastings.

Nestled between Hollywood and Los Feliz at the base of Griffith Park, Cara Hotel is a hidden oasis. Tucked behind tall hedges along a busy thoroughfare, it’s easy to miss—even for locals. Just beyond the lobby’s gothic ceilings and elegant frieze moldings, the hotel opens into a dreamy, sun-dappled sanctuary. Sunlight filters through century-old olive and palm trees and shimmers off of a reflecting pool lined with glowing lanterns. White linens sway in the breeze, softening the edges of the courtyard’s open-air corridors. The effect is ethereal—somewhere between a Moroccan riad and a California daydream.

Cara Hotel’s guest rooms echo the airy tranquility of the courtyard, designed with a warm, tailored minimalism. The palette is soft and subdued: white-on-cream with natural wood accents and woven textures. Details include herringbone-patterned floors, limestone-tiled showers, tufted cream chairs, and Frette linens. Spare, intriguing photographs by local artists add a quiet sense of place.

Food & Drink

Overlooking the reflecting pool, Cara’s courtyard restaurant serves hyper-seasonal California fare with Mediterranean influences. The kitchen sources produce from a biodynamic farm in the San Gabriel Valley, and the menu changes often—but dishes like snapper ceviche and the avocado, beet, and grapefruit salad hint at the bright, health-forward flavors that are mainstays of the menu. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner plus brunch on weekends. Among locals, Cara is a favorite for alfresco dining before a show at the Hollywood Bowl or the Greek Theatre.

Around the corner from the courtyard, Cara Bar offers a moody, romantic counterpart to the airy restaurant with red velvet chairs, candlelight, and hand-painted frescos. Mirroring the ethos of the kitchen, the bartenders craft seasonal cocktails with local spirits and farm-fresh ingredients. The bar also features biodynamic wines from local winemakers. The bar’s French doors open to an outdoor patio with fire pits and cozy seating. On Wednesday nights, the bar heats up with live salsa music, while Sundays offer the soothing sounds of a jazz trio.

Neighborhood

Cara sits on the edge of Los Feliz, just a stone’s throw from Thai Town, Griffith Park, and all the lively eccentricities that make East L.A. such a vibrant destination. It’s a neighborhood that rewards curiosity: hike up to the Griffith Observatory or the Hollywood sign, discover craft coffee shops and taco stands, and lose track of time exploring indie bookstores and vintage shops. And yet, back at Cara, the city’s noise fades behind the tall hedges. The hush of the courtyard and the rustle of olive trees welcome you back to your own little pocket of calm. It’s L.A., filtered and softened through a sun-dappled lens.

The Atlas Calistoga: Wine Country’s Newest Luxury Hideaway

As Napa Valley’s northernmost wine appellation, Calistoga blends a small-town charm and slower pace with world-class wines, cuisine, and spas. Generations have long been drawn to the region’s hot springs and bubbling muds. The steaming sites near the base of Mount Saint Helena were originally discovered by the indigenous Wappo tribe some 8,000 years ago. When American settlers arrived in the 1840s, the news of the hot springs’ “healing powers” quickly spread thanks to a wealthy, enterprising newspaper publisher who built Calistoga’s first spa resort. Over 150 years later, Calistoga remains a destination for relaxation and rejuvenation with more than a dozen spas and hot springs resorts.

In addition to its soothing mineral waters and mud baths, Calistoga is credited with putting Napa Valley on the global wine map. The region’s volcanic soils and long growing season attracted winemakers as early as the 1860s. But wine critics had paid little attention to the region’s wines until the 1976 Judgment of Paris, when a Calistoga chardonnay from Chateau Montelena beat out the best French winemakers, sending shock waves through the viticultural world. Today, Calistoga is home to more than 50 wineries—mostly family-owned—which produce some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon anywhere.

Calistoga’s historic downtown is lined with spas, wine-tasting rooms, boutique shops, art galleries, and acclaimed restaurants, all clustered in a charming, walkable setting backed by pine-covered mountains. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Calistoga a “Distinctive Destination,” recognizing the city as one of an elite group of American communities dedicated to preserving its character and sense of place.

The Inn at Newport Ranch

When Will Jackson began planning to build The Inn at Newport Ranch near Fort Bragg, he dreamed of creating a walk-in fireplace that you could actually sit in. With the help of a crane, the builders placed stones weighing several tons where his dream hearth would reside before the walls or roof of the inn were ever constructed. Today, that cozy sanctuary is a 20-foot-wide fireplace in the inn’s Newport Room where guests can warm themselves and enjoy a glass of wine while sitting in the fireplace. In addition to the walk-in fireplace, nearly all of the inn’s guest rooms and suites feature wood-burning fireplaces. There’s also a kettle-style fire pit suspended from a trio of metal poles for enjoying an oceanfront fire on the bluff while the sun sets.

In Yountville, Maison Fleurie (or the Magnolia Hotel as it was originally named) was built in 1873 of stone from local quarries and bricks from a demolished church. It is Napa Valley’s oldest hotel. One of the best-preserved spaces in the hotel is the dining room. Located just off the lobby, a brick fireplace is the focal point of a snug dining room decorated with antique treasures, pendant lights with Edison bulbs, tufted wingback chairs, and an inviting farmhouse dining table and chairs. It’s a cozy place to enjoy the inn’s gourmet breakfasts and evening wine and cheese.

One of Lake Tahoe’s best-kept secrets is the lodge bar, which serves a rotating selection of craft beers, California wines, and small plates that can be enjoyed fireside. In addition, all of the lodge’s guest rooms and cabins feature private gas fireplaces.

The fireplace is surrounded by Arts and Crafts-style leather couches, chairs, and tables where guests gather to read, play games, and sample the chef’s culinary creations. Cozy shag rugs and a tall bank of windows overlooking the ocean add to the room’s appeal. The tiles were handmade by Ernest Batchelder in his Los Angeles workshop in 1910. Sometimes, people stop by the inn just to see the tiles, which are highly sought-after collectibles. The fireplace, along with the great room’s beautiful woodwork and cozy seating, creates a welcoming space to gather with a glass of wine on a cool winter evening.

Timber Cove Resort

On the rugged Sonoma coastline, a three-story stone fireplace soars up through the exposed wood timbers in the great room of the Timber Cove Resort. The fireplace is original to the 1963 resort, which was designed by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright. The resort underwent a massive renovation in 2016 to bestow the comforts and amenities of a modern boutique hotel while retaining the resort’s architecture and authentic midcentury vibe. Today, the massive stone fireplace presides over cozy seating areas, a full bar, an impressive collection of vinyl records, and board games and books. The resort also features a retro steel fireplace in the restaurant, gas fireplaces in most of the guest rooms, and two outdoor fire pits, one of which overlooks the ocean.

Today, it’s the inviting focal point of the dude ranch’s lobby and western-style bar. After a day of horseback riding, guests can curl up next to the fire on cozy couches flanking the hearth. The Pelican Inn

Minutes north of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, The Pelican Inn is a coastal Tudor-style country inn steeped in 16th-century English legend and lore. The essence of ancient times is captured perfectly in the traditional pub and restaurant where a recessed inglenook fireplace adds warmth, glow, and story to the room. The fireplace features a hidden “priest hole” which has a trap door leading to a small escape room. The feature is a nod to the Catholic priest-hunting days of medieval England when people would secretly harbor priests from bounty hunters. The mantle above the fireplace reads, “Fear knocked at the door, faith answered, no one was there.”

The Old Monterey Inn was built in 1929 by Carmel Martin Sr., a grandson of Monterey’s earliest pioneers who laid plans for the City of Monterey and served as its first mayor. His grand, three-story English Tudor features the original wood-burning fireplaces in the dining room and parlor. The dining room fireplace has a unique hammered metal hood with a fleur-de-lis motif. Breakfast is served each morning in the dining room next to the roaring fire. In the parlor, the fire crackles during the evening wine reception where guests can curl up in front of the hearth. Each of the inn’s guest rooms and suites features fireplaces as well.

I could hear the party pulsing on the hotel’s rooftop lounge from the moment I arrived. The valet driver who took my car was wearing pink sunglasses, as was the surfer dude posing as a front desk clerk who checked me in. When I later ventured up to the roof, DJs were cranking out tunes for a crowded dance floor where nearly everyone was wearing pink sunglasses as well. One of the dancing wait staff slipped a pair of pink sunglasses into my hand and invited me to dance. I put them on and joined the crowd dancing in the hazy, golden-hued sunshine and ocean breeze.

The playful décor includes bedside tables inspired by Jeff Koons, a hand-drawn wallpaper print of signed handprints, and half-moon orange pendant lights on dimmers. The rooms are also equipped with 49-inch HD TVs with media hubs, free WiFi, and well-curated honor bars with chilled mixers stashed in the fridge.
