Historic California Landmarks Reinvented as Boutique Hotels

Some boutique hotels come with more than style and service—they come with stories. Across California, a surprising number of stays began as something entirely different: a lighthouse guiding ships to shore, a courthouse annex, even a 1950s auto repair garage. These buildings have lived whole other lives before being reborn as one-of-a-kind escapes for travelers. Today, their pasts whisper through preserved architecture, clever design nods, and the occasional ghost of their former purpose.

The Butler Hotel

A sophisticated industrial-chic retreat in San Luis Obispo, The Butler Hotel was once a 1950s auto repair garage. The vintage metal and steel prefab structure had sat abandoned for years when a local architect saw its potential hidden beneath the overgrown ivy. Repurposed into a boutique hotel, the property still sports weathered steel panels and polished concrete floors that reveal the patina of age. However, once inside, the industrial façade gives way to an unexpectedly upscale experience featuring mid-century modern design elements, a vinyl library lounge, and a curated collection of art. The hotel also offers modern tech features like self-check-in and virtual concierge services.

The Darling Hotel

The Darling Hotel’s elegantly restored Art Deco building once served justice, not rooftop cocktails. Built in 1935 as the Tulare County courthouse annex, the stunning building was part of Visalia’s old courthouse square. An earthquake destroyed the courthouse in 1952, but the surviving annex remained in use until 2008. A decade later, local investors restored the building to its former grandeur and opened it as a boutique hotel steeped in Art Deco style. Most of the original woodwork and architecture was preserved, including the lobby’s high ceilings and terrazzo floors. The former board chambers are now suites featuring original mahogany doors and built-in alcoves, while a new rooftop restaurant and heated pool infuse the storied property with modern luxury.

East Brother Light Station

Perched on a rocky islet in San Francisco Bay, East Brother Light Station has guided mariners since 1874 and remains one of California’s last Victorian lighthouses. The lighthouse was slated for demolition in the 1960s, but the Contra Costa Shoreline Parks Committee stepped in to secure recognition for the lighthouse on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1980, a non-profit organization restored the lighthouse and opened it as a bed and breakfast inn. For over 40 years, guests have arrived by boat to be carried back in time, regaled by stories of the lighthouse’s fabled past, and treated to extraordinary meals. Revenues from the inn keep the lights on and ensure the lighthouse’s ongoing restoration and maintenance.

Delta King Hotel

In the 1920s, the Delta King once ferried passengers nightly on the 10-hour cruise between San Francisco and Sacramento. During its heyday, the riverboat’s paddlewheel turned to the beat of jazz bands as patrons reveled in prohibition-era drinking, gambling, and fine dining. During World War II, the Delta King was drafted into the U.S. Navy to serve as a naval barracks and hospital ship in San Francisco Bay. Now moored along the Old Sacramento waterfront, the meticulously restored woodwork and Art Deco details evoke the ship’s glamorous cruising days while two restaurants and a bar bring a lively energy to its decks. Renovated staterooms feature period touches along with upscale amenities and riverside views. Guests enjoy a voyage through time that never leaves the dock.

Presidio Lodging

Within the historic Presidio in San Francisco, two hotels share a rich military past. The Lodge at the Presidio was a former U.S. Army barracks that housed soldiers, while the nearby Inn at the Presidio served as the Bachelor Officers’ Quarters. Both hotels preserve their red-brick facades, but inside, the buildings were reimagined as luxurious, contemporary boutique hotels that honor their military history with inspired design. The Lodge at the Presidio’s original mess hall is now an elegant dining room. The Inn at the Presidio’s suites exude the understated luxury and comfort once reserved for Army officers. Both hotels feature broad porches lined with rocking chairs and a rich array of modern comforts that evoke life “at ease.”

McCloud River Bed & Breakfast

In a former lumber town near Mt. Shasta, a historic building that once housed the lumber company’s bank, offices, and telephone switchboard is now home to the McCloud River Bed & Breakfast. Built in 1903 by the McCloud River Lumber Company, the building was a hub of town life where workers cashed paychecks and managers planned timber harvests. Beautifully restored and renovated, the McCloud River B&B turned each of the spaces into rooms inspired by their history. The switchboard operator’s office became the Switchboard Room, the complaint department became the Mother McCloud Suite, and the former bank vault was transformed into a unique private dining space.

Inn at Schoolhouse Creek

Nestled on a rise above the Mendocino Coast, the Inn at Schoolhouse Creek features several historic cottages. Among the most unique is the Water Tower Cottage. During World War II, the water tower served as a lookout equipped with an anti-aircraft battery for the U.S. Coast Guard. Today, the tower is a prime perch to watch the sunset over the ocean. The base of the tower holds a private hot tub, while a spiral staircase leads to a platform with breathtaking views. Through various eras, the inn’s other historic cottages housed mill workers, military officers, and wandering musicians. Today, they welcome guests with ocean breezes, lush gardens, and a rich history.

The Queen Anne Hotel

Built in 1890 as Miss Mary Lake’s School for Girls, The Queen Anne Hotel retains its genteel Victorian grace. Nestled on the edge of San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood, the grand Victorian was meticulously restored and transformed into a boutique hotel in the 1980s. Upon entering through the etched glass doors, the hotel transports guests to a bygone era with ornate interiors and exquisite antiques. A grand staircase leads to 48 elegant guest rooms, including the popular Mary Lake Suite, which was once the office of the school’s headmistress. Many of the rooms feature wood-burning fireplaces and floor-to-ceiling bay windows. In keeping with the period charm and traditions, the hotel serves afternoon tea and sherry in the parlor each day.

Originally built in 1926 as a private athletic club, the Downtown L.A. Proper Hotel was reimagined as a modern boutique hotel in 2021. The creative vision of designer Kelly Wearstler masterfully blends the building’s period architectural elements—including its athletic facilities—with a soulful mix of Mexican modernism and other design influences. The Basketball Suite reimagines the building’s original basketball court as a dramatic, luxury suite with double-height ceilings featuring a basketball hoop. The spacious, one-of-a-kind Pool Suite was built around the original indoor swimming pool and features a stunning ceramic tile mural.

Monarch Butterflies Return to Pacific Grove

Every fall on the Monterey Peninsula, the charming seaside town of Pacific Grove transforms into a stage for one of nature’s most enchanting migrations. Beginning in October, thousands of monarch butterflies travel thousands of miles to their overwintering havens along the California coast. One of the favored stops is the Pacific Grove Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, which earned Pacific Grove the nickname, “Butterfly Town, U.S.A.”

On cooler days, the monarch butterflies cluster in the branches of the grove’s eucalyptus, pine, and cypress trees to maintain their body temperature. On warmer days, visitors are treated to a magical show as the butterflies take flight among the trees. The monarch butterflies remain at the sanctuary from mid-October until February, when they continue their migration south. The butterfly population peaks at the sanctuary between late November and early December. Admission to the sanctuary is free.

5 Coastal Escapes to Beat the Heat this Summer

When the summer temperatures start to soar inland, California’s 840-mile-long coastline offers relief. Here are five places to escape the heat with stunning natural attractions and natural air conditioning in the form of cool ocean breezes.

A couple tourists hiking in Redwood National Park, California
Hiking in Redwood National Park

California’s Redwood Coast

This lush wonderland on the Northern California coast blends ancient redwoods with fern-filled canyons and rugged coastline shrouded in fog. Redwood National and State Parks are home to the tallest trees on the planet, some of which are more than 2,000 years old. You can hike in the cool shade of these awe-inspiring trees with trails ranging from easy loops to more strenuous treks that take you from the redwoods to the ocean and back. One of the park’s primeval highlights is Fern Canyon—a lush, narrow gorge dripping in ferns and famously featured in Jurassic Park. Parking permits are required for the trailhead between May 15 and September 15. At the coast, you can explore tidepools and watch for migrating whales and shorebirds.

Where to Stay

Just a mile from the ocean, the Historic Requa Inn stands above the banks of the Klamath River and is surrounded by the vast forestland and wilderness areas within Redwoods National and State Parks. At the gateway to Eureka’s historic district, the Carter House Inns offer elegant accommodations among four magnificent Victorians.

Mendocino Headlands State beach
Mendocino Headlands State Beach

Mendocino Coast

With dramatic ocean bluffs and windswept beaches, the Mendocino Coast is a magnet for artists, romantics, and adventurers alike. Perched on the headlands overlooking the sea, Mendocino Village hosts the acclaimed Mendocino Music Festival each year in July. Up the road, you’ll find dahlias the size of dinner plates, heritage roses, and more in bloom at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. In Fort Bragg, hop aboard the Skunk Train or pedal rail bikes through an ancient redwood forest. Rent an outrigger canoe or kayak from  Catch-A-Canoe to explore the tranquil waters of Big River. At Van Damme State Park, you can paddle through sea caves or visit an ancient pygmy forest. Several more state parks offer hikes to waterfalls, strolls along coastal headlands, historic lighthouses, and other treasures.

Where to Stay

Mendocino Village offers a rich collection of historic stays, including Headlands Inn, Inns of Mendocino, MacCallum House Inn, and Seagull Inn Bed & Breakfast. In Fort Bragg, consider the beautifully restored Noyo Harbor Inn above the Noyo River or the luxurious Inn at Newport Ranch’s 2,200-acre oceanfront setting. Cayucos

On California’s Central Coast, the laid-back beach town of Cayucos is an idyllic spot for a summer getaway. Located right off Highway 1, but a bit off the beaten track, Cayucos beckons with sand, surf, and small-town charm. At low tide, Cayuco’s sandy beach extends five miles south to Morro Bay, creating an unbroken expanse of sand for runners and beachcombers. Low tide also reveals fascinating tidepools brimming with sea anemones and crabs. Along the craggy coastline to the north, Estero Bluffs offers great hikes along the bluffs with stunning views and secret coves. Weaving through the grassy hills rising above town, mountain biking and hiking trails deliver heart-pumping adventures with coastal views as well. In town, browse the shops and kick back at an outdoor cafe to watch the sunset.

On the Beach Bed & Breakfast offers a fabulous location overlooking Cayucos State Beach. The inn’s spacious guest rooms feature ocean views with private balconies where you can be lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves.

Bustling State Street and the Funk Zone invite you to browse boutiques and linger at open-air cafés. Evenings glow with golden sunsets over the Pacific, offering idyllic backdrops for dining al fresco. Summer also means the city’s vibrant calendar comes alive — from concerts at the historic Santa Barbara Bowl to the colorful Old Spanish Days Fiesta, celebrating the city’s rich heritage.

Santa Cruz’s Quiet Neighborhoods for a Summer Getaway

In the summertime, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Main Beach buzz with swarms of day-trippers, screaming roller coasters, and the scent of funnel cakes wafting through the air. A few miles down the road, charming Capitola Village brims with vacationers and beach umbrellas lined elbow-to-elbow. But between these two hot spots lies a quieter coastal pocket where locals retreat—and where in-the-know travelers can experience a more authentic slice of Santa Cruz life.

Pleasure Point is steeped in surf culture. This was the longtime home of Jack O’Neill, the legendary surfer and wetsuit pioneer whose legacy still ripples across the ocean. East Cliff Drive winds atop the cliffs overlooking Pleasure Point’s surf breaks. A walking path along the cliffs provides a great perch for watching local surfers paddle out and catch waves. The laid-back neighborhood blends beachy ease with a hip, coastal sensibility. A cozy cluster of small businesses anchors the scene, where Verve Coffee Roasters brews up a perfect cup and The Penny Ice Creamery serves inventive, locally sourced flavors just steps from surf shops and casual eateries.

Just down the street, Bottega del Como offers gourmet provisions for a picnic at the beach. On Sunday mornings, the Live Oak Farmers Market draws a laid-back crowd of residents shopping for fresh produce and artisanal goods under a canopy of eucalyptus.

The reserve offers an easy urban escape with sweeping ocean views. Hike the Razor Point or Guy Fleming trails for dramatic overlooks and seasonal wildflower displays in spring and early summer.

Victorian Hotels that Transport Guests to California’s Gilded Age

California’s best-preserved Victorian hotels and bed and breakfast inns are portals to a bygone era. Spurred by the Gold Rush, these extravagant buildings were constructed during the state’s building boom and reflect the fine craftsmanship and opulence of the time. Below are some of our favorite Victorian hotels and B&Bs to experience California’s Gilded Age with period-perfect architectural details and furnishings.

The Queen Anne Hotel

Enter through the etched glass doors of The Queen Anne Hotel in San Francisco and be transported to an opulent, bygone era. Rising from the wealth of the Gold Rush, the grand Victorian mansion was originally built in 1890 as a finishing school for girls. 90 years later, new owners restored the stunning turn-of-the-century architecture and reopened it as a hotel. Today, the hotel’s lavish parlor welcomes guests with roaring fireplaces, crystal chandeliers, and exquisite antiques. A grand staircase leads to 48 elegant guest rooms and suites, all with luxurious amenities and lavish Victorian charm. Many of the rooms feature wood-burning fireplaces and floor-to-ceiling bay windows with dazzling views of Pacific Heights. In keeping with the period charm, the hotel serves afternoon tea and sherry in the parlor each day.

Churchill Manor

Steps from downtown Napa, Churchill Manor is an architectural treasure listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 10,000-square-foot Second Empire mansion was built in 1889 for a prominent Napa banker. The mansion’s old-world craftsmanship remains beautifully preserved. Original beveled glass doors open to four elegant parlors featuring fireplaces framed with redwood mantels and paneling. Large doorways with massive redwood pocket doors separate the parlors. Six solid redwood-fluted Corinthian columns grace the grand staircase and the music room. Upstairs, 10 elegant guest rooms are each named for Napa Valley wine-growing regions and feature hand-painted doors and European antiques. The mansion’s wide, wraparound porch overlooks an acre of beautiful gardens. Long-time owners Brian and Joanna serve evening wine and cheese and multi-course breakfasts with convivial hospitality.

Gingerbread Mansion

In the Victorian village of Ferndale, staying at the Gingerbread Mansion Inn is like stepping into a Victorian fairytale. Originally constructed in 1895, the meticulously restored mansion incorporates Second Empire with Queen Anne and Eastlake styles. The mansion’s 11 lavish guest rooms are ornately decorated with rich jewel tones, gilded antiques, and period wallpapers. The glamorous Fountain Suite features twin claw foot tubs placed side-by-side overlooking next to a fireplace with hand-painted tiles and a Victorian fainting couch. Enter through the double doors of the Empire Suite and you’ll find an opulent California King bed flanked on either side by towering Corinthian columns. The suite features two fireplaces, including one set beside a claw foot tub. Each afternoon, the inn serves a complimentary high tea with hors d’oeuvres and sweets to enjoy in the mansion’s parlors or the English garden.

Napoleon King room at Monte Cristo Inn

Monte Cristo Bed & Breakfast Inn

Originally built in 1875 as a bordello and saloon, the Monte Cristo Bed & Breakfast Inn is possibly the oldest surviving hospitality building in San Francisco. It remained standing through the devastating 1906 earthquake and later turned into a speakeasy at the height of Prohibition. If the walls could talk, they would undoubtedly have stories to tell. Owner and innkeeper Jack Su has carefully restored the two-story hotel to recreate an ambiance of a bygone era. The inn’s 14 guest rooms are imbued with tasteful Victorian style and feature original wood floors, Persian rugs, Bradbury & Bradbury wallpapers, intricate crown molding, vintage light fixtures, and exquisite antiques. Among the few nods to the 21st Century are the luxurious ensuite marble bathrooms equipped with towel warmers and electronic bidets. Stays include a full breakfast served each morning.

Seemingly bypassed by time, the picture-perfect town of Ferndale is lined with charming Victorian storefronts in the heart of California’s Redwood Coast. Towering above the top of Main Street, the grand Victorian Inn beckons guests to experience the elegance and romance of the timber boom era. Built entirely of native redwood in 1890, the inn is an architectural treasure. The inn’s elegant guest rooms feature 14-foot ceilings, original redwood trim, vintage fixtures, lace curtains, and antique furnishings. Some of the rooms also offer cozy fireplaces and large bay windows overlooking the town. The guest rooms are located on the second floor and share a common space with a kitchenette, seating areas, games, and self-serve coffee and tea.

Margaret Simpson Room at the Simpson House Inn
Margaret Simpson Room at the Simpson House Inn

Simpson House Inn

Secluded behind tall hedges and surrounded by English gardens in a quiet historic neighborhood near State Street, the Simpson House Inn is the grand dame of Santa Barbara’s bed and breakfast inns. The Victorian Estate was built in 1874 when the only method of travel to Santa Barbara was by stagecoach or ship.  It was slated for demolition when Glyn and Linda Davies purchased the home in 1976 and embarked on a meticulous restoration. The overriding décor has a timeless, elegant quality that exudes sophistication and comfort. The six guest rooms in the main house feature antique wood beds, Persian rugs, claw foot tubs, and intricate Victorian wallpaper treatments. English-style cottages are tucked along the back of the garden. Stays include afternoon refreshments, evening wine and heavy hors d’oeuvres, dessert bites, and a gourmet breakfast served in the dining room or delivered to the guest room.

Gables Wine Country Inn

In the heart of Sonoma wine country, Gables Wine Country Inn is a beautifully restored Gothic Victorian built in 1877. The rose-hued mansion features gabled dormers with a turret and intricate wood trim. Inside, the mansion boasts three antique Italian marble fireplaces, an opulent mahogany spiral staircase, 12-foot ceilings, antique furnishings, and claw foot tubs in each of the main house guest rooms. One of the most spacious rooms is the Parlor Room, which features a massive king-sized four-poster bed and a marble fireplace. The inn is nestled on three and a half bucolic acres with an enchanting redwood grove, a small working vineyard, and an old barn that was part of the property’s original cattle ranch. A stay includes a three-course breakfast served each morning and a wine passport for complimentary wine tastings.
